This course is designed to provide the student with basic understanding of the cause of failure of normal physiological process in the body – the disease process. Emphasis will be on morphologic changes in cells and tissues that may have resulted in specific diseases identify causes of such changes (etiology), the mechanism of development of such changes (pathogenesis) and the clinical manifestation of diseases. In addition, the course will address the issue of how the failure of one organ system may affect the function of others.

Objectives

  • Identify the signs/symptoms for diseases discussed and describe the incidence, pathological characteristics, pathogenesis, etiology and subsequent prognosis.
  • Explain/diagram/recognize morphological alterations either gross or histological of the diseases discussed when applicable.
  • Explain the impact of physical therapy treatment on the disease when applicable, i.e., alleviate the signs/symptoms of the disease or alter the pathogenesis of the disease.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of good communication with the patient, patient’s family and/or health professionals regarding the basic pathology or pathophysiology of the disorder & how physical therapy treatment will impact on the disease when applicable, i.e., alleviate the signs/symptoms of the disease or alter the pathogenesis of the disease.
  • Following each system, identify and describe the signs/symptoms that require physician referral or that require emergency treatment and/or code situation.
  • Defend the relationship of the pathology to ICF – limitation in participation or NAGI aspects of impairments, functional limitations, disabilities.
  • Differentiate “red flags” or medical diagnosis that require the attention of a physician i.e., differential diagnosis of signs/symptoms that might imply a medical issue or disorder and not something that we can directly treat.
